Hi! It’s — I’m not sure what time it is… 6:58 — so it’s 7am! I’m in Whitinsville, which is the first stop. It’s been steady sprinkling, but the roads aren’t bad: they’re wet in places and dry in places. I’ve been very cautious on the descents. I’m still in the middle of the pack because I couldn’t get lined up toward the front, so it’s crowded & wet. Gonna grab some water and maybe some food here, because I’m not carrying food with me because I’m carrying my rain jacket rolled up in a jersey pocket; so that pocket got overwritten by the rain jacket. Otherwise generally happy. It’s 62 degrees, which is tolerable. Still heavy overcast, but there’s kind of a hint of blue sky, although the rain is definitely promised. That’s it for here; I’ll try to check in again from Franklin, which is another hour away.

Okay, it's quarter of seven and we're at Whitinsville. Highlights so far: very foggy and misty and humid. Just pouring sweat off me, even though it's not hot yet, although it's going to get hot, as it's starting to burn off now.

I missed Jay, my friend, when we started out, but I just ran into him, so we're gonna go on together. The key here is to keep ahead of the crowd, so I'm gonna keep it quick and keep moving.

Highlights so far... There was a trumpter playing the Emprire Strikes Back Imperial March tune as we came down one screaming descent. And some of the scenery: the ponds covered in mists, with a blue heron out there standing on the rocks in the quiet pond. It was really nice.

Other than that, I'm averaging about 20 miles per hour, which is ridiculously fast, and that'll certainly slow down. This is always the fastest part of the ride because it's mostly downhill.

There's also just a ton of riders out, so I want to try and get ahead of them. That's it for now. Next stop in Franklin in about an hour, about quarter of eight.

Hey it's 6:45 in the morning and I'm at the first stop in Whitinsville, and we pretty much flew on that segment. Now that I've stopped, I'm kind of sweaty, but it wasn't bad out on the road: kinda cool, clammy, humid, but cool enough so that it wasn't a problem, but I think it's gonna warm up very quickly. I'm just gonna grab some Gatorade and get out of here. So far so good. The wheel has successfully navigated the first segment, so pretty happy with that, and just pretty happy overall. Just want to stay ahead of the crowd. That's it, I'll talk to you again soon.

Good morning. It seems to be 6:57 and I'm in the first water stop: Whitinsville. Whitinsville is kind of the beginning of the Blackstone River Valley, which is America's oldest American manufacturing area, known for textiles in the colonial era.

And in a few minutes I'll be passing through Mendon, which is the site of Aerosmith's first gig, in 1970 at Nipmuck Regional High School.

Also last year at this stop I stopped and kind of was amazed at the number of people here who had been affected by cancer, just the sheer number of people. And this year it's kind of a little bit different, kinda looking at the sheer number of people who are doing something about it. So very encouraging.

The ride's going well. I started out in the lead group and continue to be in the lead group, averaging 19 miles per hour, which is pretty fast. So hopefully things will continue going well and I'll talk to you again shortly at the next water stop.

Hi, I'm now at the Whitinsville rest stop, which is 25 and a half miles into the ride. It is now 7:30 just about, which puts me about 15 minutes ahead of the schedule I've set for myself. Need to go fetch water and Gatorade, but so far the ride's going well. I'm averaging over 17 miles an hour, which is pretty fast, especially over the hilly portion of the route. But overall feeling really good and just amazed that if you look at the number of people here -- both riders, volunteers, people lining the route, and all the people who sponsor riders -- and most of these people all have stories about cancer and some of them miraculous and some of them tragic, and it's... it's really moving. Not really gonna think more about that while I'm standing here not moving down the road, but it's in the back of my mind as I'm peddling all the way. That's it, I'll call you from the next stop!

Hey it's 7:45 and I'm at the Whitinsville rest stop, 25 miles into the ride. So far so good; it hasn't been bad. It's still hot and moist, but it hasn't gotten really bad yet. Looking forward to the rest of the ride. Been riding with a bunch of friends. Gotta go now, 'cos I gotta fill up my water bottles, but I'll be outta here and give another report shortly. Talk to you later. Bye bye.
