Okay, I’m at Lakeville [error: actually Franklin]. I synced up with Jay to get my fender and arm warmers, which is good because it started raining about half an hour ago in earnest. It’s steady; it’s not real heavy, but I’m fully soaked. Still gonna forego the rain jacket because it’s warm enough to just deal with it anyway, and it really holds the sweat in. 42 miles in, still got another 70 miles to go. Not feeling bad, doing okay, still in the middle of the group, and will probably stay that way at least until lunch. Generally morale is positive despite the rain, but it’s gonna be a messy, slick ride in. Doing okay, making okay time, but not pushing it. We’ll see how it goes from here, but generally happy.

Haha surprise! I'm in Franklin. I completely lost Jay on that whole segment, but now I've run into him again at the rest stop, so we're gonna try that one all over again.

Another very fast but very soaking wet, humid, misty, hot segment. Feeling pretty good, the legs are a little bit tight, but you know everything's going very well. Just generally having a decent time. Been pushing it along, but I think I'm gonna take it a little bit easier from here on out. Trying to stay ahead of the crowd, still,

So far it's nice. The crowds aren't huge in terms of the spectators as compared to normal, but it's always good to have people out, and there are sufficient people out to cheer us on. And gawd there's a lot of riders! Which means I want to keep moving to keep ahead of them.

Otherwise... Jay's inserting ice cubes inside his bandana! So we're trying to stay cool, and the best way to do that is to stay on the road and keep a little breeze in our faces.

We're gonna move on, but things are going well so far. And we're a good 43 miles into the ride, so we're more than a third of the way in: close to halfway almost, maybe in another hour or so. The next call will be from the lunch stop at Dighton.

Okay, we have arrived in Franklin, the second stop. It's now 7:50, which puts me... 7:50? Puts me about 25 minutes ahead of schedule, so I'm moving right along. I know Jay's 20 minutes behind me, so I probably won't see him until Mass Maritime probably. Just gonna do a little stretching, get some ice and Gatorade here, and get out of here because I want to stay ahead of the pack. But so far a great day. Bike's holding up well; I'm holding up well, although I'm feeling a little crampy. And since I won't be pacelining and drafting other people, I'm gonna be taking it a little bit easier and being a little more conservative for the next couple segments. So I'm gonna nurse it from here on in, but I'm still making good time. Next update from the lunch stop!

Well things have gone a little bit awry here. Actually right after I talked to you at the Whitinsville stop, realized that one of my rear spokes had broken, which is a pretty dire consequence. Particularly since I have spokes that pretty much no one at the mechanics can fix. So they trued my wheel and I kept going although a little bit gingerly. My average speed has dropped from 19 to 18. So I'm taking it a little bit more careful.

Currently at the Franklin stop, 43 miles in. I'm still right on schedule, time-wise. Pretty soon, actually another 10 miles, I'll reach the halfway point of day one.

So it's not that bad, as we kind of skirt the corner of Rhode Island in the town of Attleboro. Attleboro is the closest point we get to RI and coincidentally it's also a town that has seven companies that contribute to major cancer hazards including the worst offender in Massachusetts, and a landfill containing uranium fuel rods. So I'll hopefully not get stuck in Attleboro on the way through.

That's it. The fog has burned off. It's now a warm and sunny day in the mid-70s. It'll soon be getting hotter as the sun continues to climb, it only being 8 in the morning at this point.

That's it. Next stop is another hour down the line, so I will talk to you again shortly, hopefully with the bike still in one piece. The body's willing, but the machine is gonna have to be treated a little gingerly today. Talk to you soon.

Welcome to the Franklin water stop; it's our second stop. It's now 8:35 in the morning and I'm 43 miles into it, which is nearly half -- well not quite halfway, maybe it's a third of the way. Hopefully you can hear me over the music they're pumping here. Things are going real well. Gonna stop for a few extra minutes here because the next leg is one of the longer legs, between here are Dighton, which is the lunch stop. Overall moving right along, still averaging 17 and a half over again the most hilly part of the ride, which probably means I'm gonna hit the wall on the flat part of the ride. But so far so good, having a great time. Just trying to stay ahead of the pack so I can get through the water stops quickly and get to Bourne quickly, so I can ensure that I get my spot in line for a massage. That's it for now, I'll talk to you again in probably a couple hours.

Ok we're at the Lakeville [error: actually Franklin] stop. It's now 9am and making a very good pace. A little bit ginger in the knees and the ankle but I'm now hanging around with my buddy Charlie and we are taking it easy. Gonna try and hydrate, and all in all it's going well. Sun's coming up and it's turning hot, so not gonna stay here for very long but just gonna recharge the water and get back on the road toward the lunch stop, which is in Dighton/Rehoboth. That's it; another update shortly. Talk to you later. Bye bye.
