Thanks! I really haven't tried any bourbons, so I can't say anything there. But there are definitely some scotches that are more approachable than others. Stay away from Islays, and consider the Highland Park.

The best way, of course, is to buy drams at bars/restaurants until you've found something you really like. It can be pricey, but less pricey than buying a whole bottle of something you don't like. Oh, and there's some kinds that come in nip bottles, which are doable, too...
