We have several solar-powered items including an emergency weather radio and at least one powerpack for recharging phones or whatever. The radio lives on the kitchen windowsill. It has an alarm feature where, if you activate that during something like a tornado watch, it will start shrieking if there is a Warning update. Very handy on the days when the watch spans several hours or more.
We also have a woodstove, oil lamps, and a couple of camping lanterns for reading because in rural Illinois, the power goes out many times a year. Options are good.
