As for your sales experience the Apple Store has a nice set of open computers. People go in there and spend hours surfing the web. Heck, I've gone in there when I've been paged while at the mall to fix a problem. So the problem wasn't the store, it was that people were using bandwidth. That's not really Apple's fault.
Most monitors these days have HDMI or VGA (my monitor has VGA and DVI), so I'm not surprised they don't stock the DVI adaptor. But still....buy online :D
